Christmas Tree Tips

Christmas Tree Tips

The perfect Christmas starts with the perfect Christmas tree! We've got some tips to help you pick out the best Christmas tree this silly season.

Before you even go shopping remember to measure the spot the tree will sit in including height, width and any doorways the tree will have to pass through. This will help you avoid having to rearrange your home when you find the tree is too large to fit.

The type of tree you choose can affect the life-span and qualities of the tree. For instance spruce trees are known for their sturdy branches (even under heavy decorations), but can be prone to dropping a lot of needles and so should only be kept for a short time. The various types of fir trees are popular for being very fragrant and having soft needles with colours ranging from bright green to bluey to silver. Douglas firs have a distinct pyramid shape, while Fraser firs are much more slender (ideal for tight squeezes in the living room). Pine trees have little fragrance but are better for those with allergies and also hold their needles longer.

Remember the decorations! It is important when buying a tree to remember that it will be covered in beautiful decorations. Always buy a tree that is two feet shorter than your ceiling so that you can fit that pretty ornament on top without hitting the ceiling. Similarly think about how many decorations you are going to put on. If you've got a lot how about considering a tree with strong branches? If you're going for the minimalist look, a tree with an attractive shape might be ideal.

Christmas trees should be stored outside as long as practical and kept in a cool place, away from windows where it can be hit by that strong New Zealand sun. Make sure you water the tree as soon as possible once you get it back home, and remember to keep it watered at all times. Summer trees are thirsty trees! If they produce heat, remember to turn off your Christmas lights at night to reduce the risk of fires.

To help you make the most of the holiday season we've put together a list of some local Christmas tree suppliers as recommended by View Dunedin.
