This exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery brings together a collection of works by some of New Zealand’s most recognised and notable artists from the late twentieth century to the present, including: Len Lye, Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Lisa Reihana and Peter Robinson.

As the title Back in Black signifies this selection of artworks is based around a shared tonal consistency and aesthetic relativity. However at a deeper level this minimal palette reflects these artist’s attempts to grapple with a number of existential concerns, cultural situations and political topics that have arisen over the recent past.

Dunedin Public Art Gallery has one of the largest and most comprehensive art collections in the country, including significant holdings of New Zealand works from 1860 to the present, outstanding collections of historical European art, Japanese prints, and decorative arts.

Located in the heart of the city, the Gallery exhibits works of national and international art from the collections and has a dynamic programme of special exhibitions ranging from contemporary New Zealand artists' projects to high-profile exhibitions from overseas collections.
